Hepatitis C

Hepatitis C is a liver inflammation caused by the virus HCV. If it is not treated promptly, it often becomes chronic. This means it becomes a permanent condition. The consequences for your health can be serious and, in some cases, even life-threatening.

For people with HIV, chronic hepatitis C usually progresses more rapidly, and it leads to liver failure more often. Some HIV-positive people respond badly to hepatitis C therapy.

HIV-positive people also seem to have a higher risk of becoming infected with hepatitis C from sex. This applies primarily to men who have sex with men.
