Where get tested?
HIV tests are on offer at public health authorities and doctor’s offices. In some cases, tests are also offered at AIDS service organizations and establishments for gay men. The AIDS service organization at the telephone number 0180 33 19411 can tell you where you can get tested.
Public health authorities provide the test free of charge or for a small fee. The big advantage: you can remain anonymous; you do not have to give your name.
If you are tested in a doctor’s office, the results are normally added to your medical file. This could cause problems later when applying for certain insurances. People who have HIV are still excluded from disability insurances and most life insurance plans.
When in doubt, we recommend seeking counsel to clarify whether, when and where you would like to get tested. The AIDS service organizations offer counseling in person, over the phone and online. Counseling can also be anonymous.
