Sexually transmitted infection (STIs) are not only unpleasant; they can also have serious consequences for your health if they are not treated promptly. They can particularly affect the health of people with HIV.
Some infections can be much more severe for HIV-positive people. Added to that, sexually transmitted infections increase the chance of passing on HIV, as particularly high levels of the virus are present around the inflamed area.
Condoms reduce the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections, but they do not offer perfect protection. Some infections are very easy to transfer.
If you have sex with different partners, you should get yourself tested every year. If you have many partners, you should be tested every six months.
That way, you can be treated as soon as possible if it’s necessary.
